Background Over the past fifty years broiler production accounted for almost all of the meat chickens produced in the UK. As a result, only broiler hybrids were available for use by UK producers, and these were not thought to be suited for use in some extensive production systems. This meant that when consumer demand for extensively produced chicken meat increased in the late 1990s producers were unable to quickly identify and source the most suitable hybrids for UK conditions. Furthermore, systems of extensive production were still being developed, and little was known about design and management factors affecting range usage. Project OF0153 aimed to characterise breed suitability for extensive production (free-range, traditional free-range and... |

The maintenance of udder health is one of the biggest problems in organic dairy farming. Therefore, it was the aim to explore the experience of successful farming experts to evaluate their individual complex solutions for mastitis ans somatic cell count problems. 7 organic dairy farmers in Baden-Württemberg/Germany were selected, who achieved an above-average low somatic cell count. Qualitative steeredquestion interviews and the observation of two milkings were used to investigate their knowledge and insight and their practical daily actions. The results were clustered in the following areas: milk analysis, animal health and therapy, animal husbandry and hygiene in the barn, milking machine, milking management and hygiene, feeding, raising of... |

The European Union (EU) accomplished its biggest enlargement process in 2004 in terms of the number of countries, area, and population. This study focuses on the impact of enlargement, the resulting technology transfer on the grain sectors of the New Member States (NMS), and the consequent welfare implications. The study finds that EU enlargement has important implications for the EU and the NMS, but its impact on the world grain markets is minimal. The results show that producers in the NMS gain from accession because of higher prices, whereas consumers in most NMS face a welfare loss. Incorporating technology transfer into the accession increases the welfare gain of producers despite falling prices because of the larger supply shift. The loss of welfare... |

Recently, family farming has become a central element in the public debate over its fundamental role in rural areas. Family farming is an important way to ensure agricultural and forestry production, as well as fishing and grazing, managed and run by a family that mostly depends on unpaid family labour, both women and men. From the 570 million farms in the world, over 500 million are family farms. In Portugal, 96% of the farms are of the family-type, which permanent and predominantly use labour belonging to the family. There are numerous examples in which, through organic farming, family farming can be lead to new heights of success and innovation, with direct impact on the increase in the farm income. The benefits that may accrue from the adoption of... |
